I think it would be really cool if certain random events occurred in the airport every now and then. It would mean that you would have to jump in and control the situation so the airport can return to normal. You could have things like airplane emergencies (fire, engine failure etc.) or it could be in the airport its self (terrorism, fire, medical emergency, weather problems, staff strike).
I’m pretty sure that is planned as a feature.
