Not even shortened, it is a CRJ700 but “re-certified” as a different aircraft
The 50 that United are initial getting are used CRJ700s which are being converted:
“United plans to operate 50 CRJ550s, all of which will be converted to the new derivative from used CRJ700s.”
Let me guess, the ERJ550 will also get additional fuel tanks.
They did the same some years ago with the ERJ145XL
